As a sea of excited students waited to march into the auditorium at the University of Miami’s Watsco Center on Saturday to celebrate four inspiring, demanding years of medical school and the incredible opportunity that lies ahead, Kelly McCarter thought for a moment and then described the significance of this day. “It’s been a long time coming, a lot of hard work,” she said.

In addition to hours of class work, clinical training, and endless amounts of studying, medical students also face the challenge of focusing in on which medical specialty they would like to pursue. The Office of Student Services tries to make that task a little easier each year by hosting numerous events, including the annual Career Advising Dinner.

A pair of Miller School students took home the Grand Prize in the Graduate/Alumni Track — and a check for $10,000 — in the 2018 University of Miami Business Plan Competition, sponsored by the UM Business School. They also walked away with a separate check for $1,500 for the Best Presentation in the Graduate/Alumni Track. The competition’s final presentations and award ceremony took place on April 11.

With the telltale beating of a single drum and a tap on the shoulder with an iron arrow, members of the Iron Arrow Honor Society this week renewed one of the U’s greatest spring traditions. Marching across the Coral Gables and medical campuses in a solemn procession, they bestowed a leading University of Miami honor on 22 lucky recipients — membership in the organization that recognizes students, faculty, staff, and alumni.

The University of Miami Miller School of Medicine has been ranked among the top 50 medical schools nationally by U.S. News & World Report in the 2019 edition of “Best Graduate Schools.” In that compilation, the Miller School is ranked No. 50 among 123 schools reporting.

A lively discussion about diversity in health care between University of Miami President Julio Frenk and students at UM’s Miller School of Medicine capped the school’s highly successful Cultural Awareness Week on Friday, January 26. Cultural Awareness Week offered a series of lunchtime presentations and discussions about a variety of diversity issues, including race, sexual identity, competency training and implicit bias.

Researchers from Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center and Bascom Palmer Eye Institute at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine have uncovered evidence that genomic aberrations in uveal melanoma that lead to metastasis may occur far earlier in tumor evolution than previously believed. The findings fundamentally change the thinking about how this eye cancer progresses.
