The University of Miami Miller School of Medicine Regional Campus has earned institutional accreditation from the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education for the next three years, the maximum allowed. The institution is the sponsor of three graduate medical education programs on the regional campus.

On a recent day in November, a group of Miller School physicians, residents and M.D./M.P.H. students turned their attention from medicine to human rights. Led by Stephen Symes, M.D., associate professor of medicine, members of the Human Rights Clinic of Miami held a workshop on the Miller School campus to help people fleeing persecution in their country of origin seek protection in the U.S.

A handful of students, including one who was invited to showcase a free and easy student-initiated Miller School program that provides hands-on ethical training to medical students, were among the presenters at the Association of American Medical Colleges’ 2012 Annual Meeting in San Francisco this month.

The medical student group MedFit and the Public Health Student Association (PHSA) hosted the third annual Push-Ups for PHSA competition at the Medical Wellness Center on November 7 to raise funds for the healthy cooking and nutrition class at Booker T. Washington Senior High School in Overtown.

Lichtstein, M.D., professor of medicine and Regional Dean for Medical Education, has been elected to Mastership in the American College of Physicians for his role as a citizen physician, educational innovator, humanist, and teacher-learner who inspires those around him and sets high standards for the practice of internal medicine.

Resolving challenging dilemmas is never easy, but as medical students from the Miller School of Medicine and doctoral nursing practice students from the School of Nursing & Health Studies learned in the first joint medical/nursing ethics session held on the Coral Gables campus this month, inter-professional dialogue can enhance teamwork and improve decision making in morally distressing situations.

For most of the Little Haiti Health Fair’s history, Antoine Dorismond’s shop was just up the street, yet the clothing designer never managed to drop in for the free health screenings. Determined not to miss out this year, he was among the few dozen people already in line when student Ryan Dauer arrived at 6 a.m. this past Saturday to ensure the 18th annual student-run fair would open without a hitch three hours later.
