Ph.D. in Biostatistics

The Ph.D. in Biostatistics, offered through the Division of Biostatistics in the Department of Epidemiology and Public Health at the Miller School of Medicine, provides a flexible curriculum to cover the basics.

Provided the student has taken foundational statistical theory courses, Ph.D. students can immediately focus on the specific area of biostatistics which interests them.

As a comprehensive and formal way to develop cognates, the division is implementing a Ph.D. minor program at the interdepartmental level. Through this program, students take between four to six three-credit graduate courses in specific topics.

Extra criteria requiring courses closely related to the student’s thesis work, or that a member in a subject matter discipline be on the student’s advisory committee, may apply in some cases. This requirement will enable students to produce a statistically-sophisticated Ph.D. thesis, and the dual emphasis will facilitate progression for the biostatistics field and provide outstanding opportunities for graduates.
